The rock formations of the Guadalupes are legendary, yet the flora is similarly diverse, ranging from prickly pear in the shadow of alligator juniper (top left), to the exotic Texas madrone, with its peeling bark and scarlet berries (bottom left), to ash and maple (top and bottom right). The autumn colors of the maples can be striking, the foliage flaring most often in orange and red (center top and bottom). The trees grow among
granite (top) and limestone (bottom) boulders, their trunks and roots like dark braids among the rocks.
