Geology and botany come together in the Guadalupes in striking and often unexpected ways, such as with this young maple glowing against the dark granite wall of Devil’s Hall (center). Every view warrants a closer look (clockwise from top right): layered rock in Pine Springs Canyon; radiant leaves on a shrub beside the high desert path at McKittrick Canyon; one of many species of agave along the trail to Guadalupe Peak; New Mexico thistle blossom in the shade of Devil’s Hall; rock entwined in water-worn wood at Pine Springs Canyon; and the berries and tropical leaves of a Texas madrone.
